Common HP Printer Problems

The listed problems are normally seen in all the Printers and the key to avoiding them is to properly maintain the printer.

Paper Jams

Paper jams mostly occur when you do not properly clean and maintain your printer or use the wrong type of paper. However, if you use the correct type of paper and properly clean the printer, hopefully, you will stay away from this issue.

It is a condition where when you get the printout, the image or the picture has a low-quality. It mainly happens when there is an issue with the power port and when consumable printer parts (such as the drum or imaging kit) are near the end of their life.

To avoid these issues, you can plug in the printer to a different power source. You should also reboot the system as well as the connected devices to see if that resolves the issue. Once the consumable parts in the printer are low you can replace them to avoid ghosting.

Trouble in Print Quality

This normally results when the toner is low. You can either replace the cartridge or shake it well so that the toner is redistributed more evenly. It can also be the result of print density being set too low or Economode printing turned on.

In many cases, people use a third-party paper to save money. This is also the reason why print quality gets low.

You can perform a printer self-test. There is a separate button on the printer which shows what the current settings are. If Economode is on, it will typically result in a light print. Turn it off and set the print density to high.

Low ink warning

This is usually observed when the cartridge runs out of ink completely. This is can potentially cause the printer to get damaged. A way out to this is to replace them.

Overheating of the Printer

This is because of the faulty cables or the driver. You can turn the printer off and let it stay for some time. It's also better to update the driver.

Printer Offline

The printer appears offline if it can not communicate with your PC.

Read this article to fix Offline Printer.

The printer is not printing from the expected paper tray

If this happens this means that the application is set to print the wrong paper tray. On the printing PC, navigate to 'Printer properties'and find the 'Tray Selection source'. Secondly, look at your printer and confirm that the paper sizes in the control panel match to what is actually in the paper trays.

Toner smears or does not stay on the paper

It is typically observed when fuser assembly gets damaged or is at the end of its life. As a result, the words and images come off or slide off the paper when a hand is run across them. It is better that you replace the fuser assembly because if you repair, it would still not deliver that result. Therefore, it is not worth the time or effort to fix.

If the toner cartridge is faulty and running too much of the ink in a black and white laser printer, it is better to replace the toner cartridge. If you have a colour laser printer, only replace the cartridge that is faulty. Occasionally, the toner spills in the printer. If so, clean it out and see if that resolves the problem.

Printer picks up all the paper from the manual feed tray rather than one sheet

This issue is often observed when the pad that is responsible for separating the paper is worn out. Replace it with a new pad and also ensure that the paper is properly fanned.

Trouble printing onto envelopes

Choose envelopes that are close to 20-lb paper in weight and thickness. The adhesive on the envelope should withstand the heat that the fuser puts out to keep the printing on the page.

Can't find a driver for a particular Operating System

With the release of the new OS's, there is always a need to load new drivers for the printer. Not all printers have a driver for every OS. In this situation, it is better to consult the printer manual to identify what printers the drivers will emulate. With this emulation, only basic printing will work and other options like duplexing will not work.

Loaded Queue

After you are done printing, the queue should also clear itself automatically. If it doesn't, this means that the printer is put on hold, postponed or stopped due to data connection issues. If the problem continues on, it can eventually cause the driver to come to a stop. Often, in this case, users end up selecting print several times over and end up overloading the queue.

To resolve this issue, you can continue reading this article.

The Printer printing only half page

Unplug the printer. Switch off your computer, then restart both of them. Run a test print out. This will hopefully resolve the issue.

If still nothing helps you out, it indicates that your printer is on its last legs. It is, however, better to buy a new one to get started with.

How do I update my HP Printer Driver?

If you update the software more often, you can keep your printer running smoothly.

Note: While the driver is updating, be cautious that you do not turn off the printer. If so happens, it could potentially damage your printer.

Note: These updates are for HP inkjet and LaserJet printers.

Note: Printer software updates downloaded from the HP website do not update the HP Photosmart Premiere or HP Photosmart Essentials software.

Make sure that the printer is plugged to the wall outlet and connected to the computer.

Reach HP Customer Support-Software and Driver Downloads. Enter the model number of your printer. Look for the 'update' on the Software and Drivers page. If there is an update available, tap on it and follow the on-screen instructions to download any updates. Otherwise, the printer software or the driver is current.
